King Charles was known as Prince Charles for 73 of his 75 years. I would hardly think that accidentally using his former title is indicative of ignorance and disdain for the institution. In fact, merely by writing about royal family members, the author acknowledges their importance on the world stage.
As to your original point, the error is akin to addressing a now Senator as Representative after the individual served in the House of Representatives for 12 terms.
